Crazy millions set a record: Rare F1 racing car sold for the highest price.
STUTTGART – A rare 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R racing car was sold at auction in Stuttgart, Germany, for a record €51.155 million.
This represents the highest price ever paid for a Formula 1 car at auction, according to Reuters. The listed price includes fees and taxes.
In 1995, the car was driven by two legendary F1 drivers, Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss. Fangio won the Argentine Grand Prix in Buenos Aires with the car, and Moss set the fastest lap in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
The auction was organized by RM Sotheby’s. The winner participated by phone, and their identity has not been disclosed.
The previous auction record for an F1 car was held by the 1954 Mercedes W196, which sold for $29.6 million at an auction in 2013. The absolute record for the most expensive car ever sold at auction remains the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé, which was auctioned for €135 million in 2022, Reuters reported.
