Lahm Open to a Leadership Role at Bayern

Won 21 trophies with the club.

Former German international Philipp Lahm can see himself returning to Bayern Munich in a leadership role.

In an interview with Bavarian newspaper Abendzeitung, Lahm revealed that he would be interested in taking on a position within the club’s management.

Now 41, Lahm spent his entire playing career at Bayern, aside from a two-year loan at Stuttgart. He captained the club for several years and won 21 trophies, including a historic treble in the 2012/13 season.

“I can definitely imagine taking on a leadership role, even at FC Bayern. I would need to grow into it, but I’ve always enjoyed having influence and social responsibility. We’ll see what happens,” said Lahm, who recently served as the head of the organizing committee for Euro 2024 in Germany.

The 2014 World Cup-winning captain noted that integrating former players into the club’s leadership is a long-standing Bayern tradition: “It’s important, and Bayern has always been characterized by bringing former players into management to ensure sporting expertise. That’s how Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoeness, and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge did it decades ago, and it remains the case today.”

Lahm added that he would love to work alongside his former teammates Bastian Schweinsteiger, as well as Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer, who are still active: “I spent a lot of time with Bastian, Thomas, and Manuel. We were always collegial and loyal, complementing and supporting each other.”
