New Cristiano Ronaldo statue unveiled on Times Square, but fans aren’t impressed

A new statue of Cristiano Ronaldo was unveiled on New York’s Times Square in celebration of his 40th birthday, but instead of admiration, it became a source of ridicule.

The statue was created by Italian artist Sergio Furnari, who invited Ronaldo’s fans via Instagram to witness the unveiling. His goal was to break a world record.

“February 5th. If you love Ronaldo, come celebrate on Times Square. It’s his 40th birthday—don’t miss it. We’re going to set a world record for the ‘Siu’ celebration,” he wrote. Ronaldo’s iconic “Siu” chant, meaning “yes” in Spanish, is a signature celebration that fans often mimic in stadiums. Whether the event achieved a record remains unclear.

Ronaldo, who currently plays for Saudi club Al Nassr, did not attend the unveiling, nor did he comment on the statue via social media.

Fans, however, were far from impressed. Social media reactions were filled with disappointment. “How is it possible that statues today look terrible, while the Greeks made masterpieces 300 years ago?” one user questioned. Another joked, “They need to stop hiring Messi fans as sculptors.”

Some also drew comparisons to Ronaldo’s infamous bust in Madeira, which was widely mocked for its lack of resemblance. “Is there no one who can sculpt this man properly?” one frustrated fan asked.
