No other outcome was expected: The Serbian federation informed about Djokovic and saddened fans.
BELGRADE – Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic, currently ranked sixth in the world, will miss Serbia’s Davis Cup qualification match against Denmark.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion is sidelined due to a left thigh injury, which forced him to withdraw from his Australian Open semifinal match last week. The Serbian Tennis Federation made the announcement.
“Without Novak, we are weakened, but we still want to win,” said Serbian team captain Viktor Troicki. “The Danes have a great player in Holger Rune, but we also have good players, and I believe in our team,” he added. Serbia will compete in Copenhagen from January 31 to February 2.
The 37-year-old Djokovic withdrew from the Australian Open semifinal against Germany’s Alexander Zverev after the first set. Fans booed him for this, prompting the former world No. 1 to post a photo of his medical examination on social media. “I’m posting this for all the experts on sports injuries,” he added.
