Pettersson’s Party In Perfect Harmony: He Arrived, Played, and Signed a Long-Term Contract Immediately
VANCOUVER – Swedish hockey defenseman Marcus Pettersson has signed a new six-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks, worth a total of $33 million, according to the NHL website. The 28-year-old defenseman will earn an average of $5.5 million per year.
Pettersson arrived in Vancouver last week from Pittsburgh shortly after the Canucks traded forward J.T. Miller to the NY Rangers. Czech forward Filip Chytil also joined Vancouver from the New York club.
A bronze medalist from last year’s World Championships in Prague and Ostrava, Pettersson has been in the NHL since 2017. He has played for Anaheim, Pittsburgh, and now Vancouver. His current contract was set to expire after this season.
“Marcus has shown that he has the skills and character we want in top defensemen. He plays calmly on the ice, is strong defensively, and also has a good first pass, which helps our offense,” said general manager Patrik Allvin.
In the current season, Pettersson has played 49 games, scoring three goals and adding 15 assists. Overall, he has played 518 games in the NHL, including playoffs, with a record of 17 goals and 138 assists.
