Serious Accident in Mallorca: Five of Six Germans Have Returned Home, One Remains in Hospital

PALMA DE MALLORCA – Five of the six German track cyclists who were injured in an accident during a training camp in Mallorca have already returned home.

However, one cyclist remains on the island, needing to wait for his flight due to a pulmonary hematoma – he is expected to fly out by Sunday. The accident occurred on Monday morning near Palma de Mallorca, close to the national team’s training camp.

The crash was caused by an 89-year-old driver who failed to notice the cyclists and collided with them head-on. The driver underwent alcohol and drug tests, both of which came back negative. The police reported that the driver claimed he was distracted and overlooked the group of cyclists.

“All athletes are expected to make a full recovery and continue their careers,” stated the German Cycling Federation in an official statement.

The injured cyclists include former U23 European Champion Tobias Buck-Gramcko, World Championship bronze medalists Benjamin Boos and Bruno Kessler, as well as Max-David Briese, Moritz Augenstein, and Louis Gentzik. All of them specialize in endurance events. This was reported by DPA.
