Vancouver Canucks make major roster shake-up: Another Pettersson? This is unbelievable!
VANCOUVER – On Friday, Vancouver made another trade in addition to the one with the Rangers, this time with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Canucks acquired defenseman Marcus Pettersson and forward Drew O’Connor. Heading to Pittsburgh are defenseman Vincent Desharnais, forwards Danton Heinen and Melvin Fernström, as well as a conditional first-round pick in this year’s draft that Vancouver had previously received from the Rangers in exchange for J.T. Miller. This was reported by the official NHL website.
After two Elias Petterssons, Vancouver will now have another player with the same surname. Marcus has 18 points (3+15) in 47 games this season.
The 28-year-old defenseman is in the final year of his five-year contract (with an average annual value of around $4 million) signed with Pittsburgh on January 28, 2020. The Swedish defenseman was selected by Anaheim in the second round (38th overall) of the 2014 draft. He has played 491 regular-season games for the Ducks and Penguins, recording 17 goals and 134 assists. In 25 playoff games, he has 0 goals and 4 assists.
Heinen previously played for the Penguins (2021/22 and 2022/23). The 29-year-old Canadian has 18 points (6+12) in 51 games this season. He signed a two-year contract with Vancouver worth $2 million annually this summer. His fellow Canadian, defenseman Desharnais, played 34 games for the Canucks this season, recording three assists. He has also previously played for Edmonton.
